New TV Licence fee to include
those who just watch YouTube and streaming?
A TIME FOR ACTION.
A new household tax is being proposed to replace the TV Licence fee in
the UK, and it will include non-BBC streaming platforms such as YouTube, Amazon
Prime, Netflix, and even EWTN On Demand. Many CUT members just watch YouTube
and EWTN On Demand occasionally, and as these programmes are streamed and not
live, therefore, the licence fee does not apply. And why should it? The BBC and
other legacy mainstream media outlets such as ITV, Channel 4 and the programmes
from the USA such as CNN and other countries push an agenda that is not
Christian.
There are many ways that are being put forward for this new tax: as an
add-on tax for your internet provider or a household tax on top of the Council
tax. They believe that having a computer or a Smartphone is simply dodging the
licence fee, when we actively avoid live broadcast media, the iPlayer, etc., as
something we would not want even if they paid us!
The BBC has lost over 800,000 viewers in the last two years, as people
do not think it's worth paying £180 per year when they hardly ever watch live
TV, and the BBC even less. Also, many feel that to watch live TV, one lets
other people set the viewing agenda for you and many people these days,
especially Catholics, would rather pick and choose what they watch and when.
Therefore, the traditional broadcasting format is out of date, with online
streaming services such as YouTube and pay-to-view platforms much more popular
than broadcast TV, where you have little say in what’s being shown.
The big problem with the licence fee for many devout Catholics is that
you are paying for the BBC to produce sinful media content such as pro-LGBT,
pro-abortion, and even misrepresenting Christians and especially Catholics.
They virtually ignore the slaughter of Christians by Islamic ‘extremists’
throughout the world.
Many programmes that we would be funding if we paid the licence fee
would be promoting abortion and homosexuality. The BBC is also very selective
and biased about what it includes in its ‘news’ programmes, often giving the Woke,
DEI version of any given news event.
They are biased toward the left/liberal social and political version of
virtually everything, and this has put many Catholics off watching and paying
for these programmes. For example:
The Independent online writes, “It is understood any new cash raised under
the plan will need to be spent on reviving local journalism and tackling
misinformation, which has fuelled the rise of parties such as Reform UK.”
Whether one agrees with Reform or not, they are entitled, as a political party,
to be treated in an unbiased way, as are other parties, and not to be targeted
simply because they are right-wing.
REQUESTED ACTIONS TO BE TAKEN BY CUT MEMBERS
Therefore, after consulting the group, we have decided to have a Prayer
Crusade on the First Sunday of Advent and to write to your MP and/or the
Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. We strongly request
that this potential new streaming tax not be imposed on people who do not watch
or record live TV or the BBC iPlayer.

the Secretary of State for Digital,
Culture, Media and Sport
